FRANK VOELKL
Perfumer
Limited Edition 06
Frank Voelkl has always been sensitive to the smells around him and has vivid memories of the intense smells of the barnyard and fresh rain on his uncle’s farm in Germany, where he was born. Later, after a few years of training abroad in the Netherlands and France, his interest in scents became more pronounced.
He remembers the rich, warm chypre fragrances her mother wore in Paris, along with the striking “statement” fragrances of the 1980s. Paris was where he started wearing perfume. It was in Paris that he started wearing fragrances and, naturally, where he first thought of becoming a perfumer.
After graduating from ISIPCA, Frank composed his first fragrance, a tiare flower. This creation propelled his career and paid a loving tribute to his Tahitian wife. Today, as a contemporary “adventurer”, Frank enjoys the opportunity to discover the world, especially on his travels to French Polynesia, where his intoxicating air is infused with the colors and scents of nature at its purest.

How does the Massimo Dutti woman smell?
The Massimo Dutti man has a natural elegance. He has classic tastes combined with modern sensibilities – and these characteristics come out in his emblematic scent.
What is the story behind the Limited Edition 06 perfume?
This new limited-edition gives tribute to sensuality and elegance through Lapsang Souchong Tea, which is a fascinating ingredient. I created it to be a magnetic and intense fragrance, with woody and spicy accents that celebrate the refinement of precious ingredients. It takes us into a mysterious world of multiple textures and scents.
The Lapsang tea is a black tea, slightly bittered by some zesty Yuzu and Blood Orange touches. I blended it with the strength of woody notes, combining the exotism of the Palisander Wood with the elegance of the Cedarwood. You will also find an irresistible, spicy vibration of Black Pepper, which enhances the sensual woody dry down and adds an addictive aspect that makes this new fragrance so fascinating.
Are there different versions of the perfume before arriving at the final fragrance? And how do you know which is the final one?
Creation is a process, so it involves plenty of trial and error, especially now that there are thousands of possible ingredients and raw materials that can be used in a formula. As perfumers, we have to make sure that we explore the whole breadth and depth of this palette, both natural ingredients and synthetics, so we can deliver the best to our clients. I know when it’s the final one when the scent brings out the expected outcome, both for me and for the client.
What are your favorite scents?
You know how they say that you cannot choose a favorite child? It’s the same with my creations. I have created fragrances for both luxury and niche brands and I’m proud of all of them. But there were two fragrances I used to own and wear when I started to discover perfumes – Kouros by YSL and Azzaro for Men. This was during the 80s and, back then, it was normal to wear these rather “loud” fragrances. Today I prefer fragrances that are a bit quieter and more elegant.
While I work, I don’t wear any fragrance in order to maintain a scent-neutral environment. But I very much enjoy wearing fragrance outside of work, specifically when I travel, and I love to use scent in my home through candles and diffusers.
An unforgettable olfactory memory?
My sensitivity to scent developed throughout my childhood. I have strong memories of my mother’s rich, warm chypre fragrances. From my earliest years, I was already sensitive to the olfactive world around me. I have vivid memories of my uncle’s farm in the countryside of my native Germany – where pungent barnyard odors like hay and fresh rain first piqued my interest in the scents of nature.
