The Windows

The annual collaboration between Massimo Dutti and AD magazine has become a highlight for pedestrians in Madrid’s Salamanca neighbourhood during the days the city hosts ARCO, the world’s largest contemporary art trade fair.
Once again this year, the fashion brand and magazine have picked a talented artist to design a booth at IFEMA, where the fair is held, as well as collaborate on the window displays at Massimo Dutti’s flagship store at Calle Serrano 48.

This year, the architectural firm BURR, responsible for designing the Guest Lounge and the AD booth at ARCO, was picked to design the Massimo Dutti store windows incorporating pieces from artists Nora Aurrekoetxea and Christian Lagata. Aurrekoetxea’s sculptures delve into the theme of love, exploring the tension of unattainable balance through twists, hidden spaces, and unexpected unions. Lagata’s work explores material relationships, incorporating natural substances like minerals, testimonies to ancient timelessness, alongside industrial elements that speak to more recent times.

Blanca del Río, a cultural manager who specialises in coordinating contemporary museum exhibitions, contextualises the Una vasta presencia (A Vast Presence) project on exhibit over these last few days in the Calle Serrano 48 store windows. “Una vasta presencia (A Vast Presence) is a convergence of Nora Aurrekoetxea and Christian Lagata’s work”, she says, “a set of pieces which, despite their apparent heaviness, are both generative and in movement. These presences are vast because they are remnants, fragments, with all the potential that this entails: they serve as a bridge between what was and what is yet to come”.
