ArtInProgress

Jean Adrienne. Opening SINGAPORE

Massimo Dutti’s ArtInProgress Project was launched to promote the creativity of local artists around the world. The project’s latest collab was with artist Jean Adrienne and was timed to coincide with the opening of a new store location in Singapore.

With a background in fashion design and ceramics, Jean Adrienne explores the fusion of function and style in the art she created for this collaboration. Whether from the function of the object itself or as a reminder of the fluidity of clay, her work is a testimony to the sense of control found in chaos.

JEAN ADRIENNE

Jean Adrienne started working with ceramics while studying in Japan in 2010. She also did formal residencies with 12th-generation pottery master Kato Hiroshige in Japan and with master ceramicist Hwang Insung in Korea in 2017 and 2022, respectively. She also took several courses in Melbourne, including glaze theories and mould making. After honing her craft for more than three years with master potter Dr. Iskandar Jalil, she now produces pieces as an artist and is a teacher and studio manager at ves.studio. She has also collaborated with leading international brands such as Glenfiddich Whisky, San Pellegrino, Shiseido and Vogue Singapore, and had a solo exhibition in 2022.

SINGAPORE

Jean Adrienne’s relationship with ceramics goes back to 2010. Her ties to Korean, Japanese and other cultures have driven her to adapt North Asian art forms into her own works. She often explores the duality of ceramics, embracing traditional techniques of making objects while also experimenting with concepts that push the boundaries of the fundamentals. Her ideas are rooted in nature, culture and her experiences.

Jean is fluent in Korean, Japanese and Mandarin, and her observations of these cultures have driven her to adapt North Asian art forms into her own works. She often explores the duality of ceramics, embracing traditional techniques of making objects while also experimenting with concepts that push the boundaries of the fundamentals. Her ideas are rooted in nature, culture and her experiences. Jean’s art is characterised by textural richness, mixes of different clays, her own glazes and the use of a one-handed technique to create pieces that illustrate the fluidity and fragility of clay.
