Massimo Dutti’s continuous search for innovation helps the brand be better and more efficient, while reducing its impact on the environment. With this in mind, the company has drawn up several multiannual environmental plans since 2002.
DESIGN SUSTAINABLE
RAW MATERIALS
Massimo Dutti pays special attention to the raw materials that are chosen for the brand’s products, as these decisions can have a direct impact on biodiversity:
– Increased use of sustainable cotton.
In 2020, the Group used more than 73,000 tons of sustainable cotton in its garments, a 91% increase.
– _ Increased use of recycled fibres and recycled polyester. In 2020, more than 9,000 tons of recycled polyester were used, 80% more than in 2019.
– We use only certified PEFC or FSC sustainable wood in our furniture and paper products.
In 2015, Inditex created the Join Life label, which promotes the use of the most sustainable raw materials—such as organic cotton, recycled polyester and Tencel® Lyocell—while prioritising the processes that are most efficient in terms of water and energy use. In 2020, 35% of all our garments featured this badge.
MANUFACTURING HEALTH AND SAFETY ENVIRONMENTAL
Massimo Dutti works closely with suppliers to ensure that they and their factories comply with the most stringent requirements in product health and safety, to ensure our commitment to customers and to the environment. The brand checks that suppliers comply with these commitments before they become part of the supply chain. Throughout the production process, the company ensures compliance with these objectives through two standards: Clear to Wear and Safe to Wear.
DISTRIBUTION CENTRE MANAGEMENT & GREEN TO PACK
100% of the energy consumed by all the logistics centres in Spain
comes from renewable sources. This means Massimo Dutti is working towards the commitment to energy efficiency across all processes. The brand has currently achieved the commitment that 80% of the energy consumed across all its distribution centres, offices and shops comes from renewable sources, and this figure will rise to 100% by 2022.
SHOPS ECO-EFFICIENCY & SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING
Our shops are the physical expression of our commitment to sustainability, incorporating the most innovative technology that makes it easier to save energy.
CLOTHES COLLECTION PROGRAMME
We are continuing our work to extend the life cycle of our products through our programme that collects used garments in store, as well the at-home pick-up option and containers placed on the street in Spain in collaboration with Caritas.
INVESTMENT IN R+D
At Inditex, we collaborate with prestigious organisations such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to advance textile recycling processes and technologies that help drive forward our strategic concept of circular economy. More specifically, we have fulfilled the commitment for 2020 with the Global Fashion Agenda to finance activities related to textile recycling, investing 3.5million dollars (three million euros) to support research in this area.
