Espadrilles (or espardenyes) remind us that summer is just around the corner and that simplicity and comfort are the only possible aesthetic mantra. This lightweight footwear, made with braided jute rope and canvas, originally from Spain and origins of which date to the 13th Century, owe their name to the word « esparto », which is a type of fiber (esparto, halfah grass or esparto grass) originally used to manufacture soles. There is a great variety of types of “espadrilles”, although they are basically divided into two types: those that are wrapped around the ankle with laces and those that are not.

Currently the trend dictates the second option. Nowadays it is quite common for the sole to be totally or partially vulcanized with a thin layer of rubber to protect them from humidity and wear-and-tear.
