Marrakesh tanneries
Marrakesh
A different attraction, away from the tourist areas, where you can discover the entire artisanal, almost ancestral process of treating animal skins in order to sell them or use them to make a range of products. The strong smell can sometimes make visiting these workshops a bit unpleasant, so grab a handful of mint before you go in and hold it to your nose to mask the smell during the tour. The tanneries are divided into two areas: one where the skins are treated to remove all organic remains, and a second area where they are dyed with a range of natural products like mint, henna and poppy flower.
