The perfumer :Signature of Alberto Morillas

In its latest creation, Massimo Dutti brings its vision together with that of Alberto Morillas, one of the most influential figures in international perfumery, whose career has shaped some of the great olfactory icons.

Some fragrances seek to build a narrative; others are born, quite simply, from an emotion. Vetiver & Bergamot, Massimo Dutti’s new creation by renowned perfumer Alberto Morillas, belongs to the latter. Conceived around an idea of luminous, natural freshness, the fragrance finds its most vibrant expression in bergamot, accompanied by the subtle warmth of spices and the deep character of vetiver. Morillas brings to the composition a sensibility closely connected to his Andalusian roots: the light, the serenity and that sense of calm he remembers from the courtyard of his childhood home. Musks add softness and volume, enveloping the skin without weighing the fragrance down and creating a delicate balance between freshness, sophistication and naturalness. Far from excess or opulence, Vetiver & Bergamot offers a discreet, intuitive and deeply sensory presence. As Morillas himself explains, it settles gently on the skin, almost like a ray of sunlight: familiar, comforting and always desirable. A precise interpretation of quiet luxury, designed to transcend seasons and accompany moments.

01

What was the first thing you imagined when Massimo Dutti invited you to create this fragrance? What story did you want to tell through its scent?

Everything begins with a sensation. I was immediately guided by an idea of luminous, natural freshness, expressed through the vibrant brightness of bergamot, the subtle warmth of spices and the elegant character of vetiver.

I have never really been interested in creating conceptual fragrances or telling overly complicated stories. What matters most to me is emotion. For Vetiver & Bergamot, my intention was to create a fragrance that feels natural and effortless, one that brings pleasure, comfort and light, and settles on the skin with elegance, like a ray of sunshine.

02

Massimo Dutti has a very distinctive identity, rooted in timeless elegance and quality. How is that universe translated into a perfume?

Timeless elegance lies in precision, balance and a touch of simplicity. This fragrance expresses that vision through a luminous freshness, a refined structure and high-quality ingredients that unfold naturally.

03

After such an extraordinary career creating some of the world's most iconic fragrances, what made this project special for you?

Every fragrance represents a new beginning. After all these years, I am still looking for that note that evokes an immediate emotion in every fragrance I create. Born in Seville, I was able to easily feel a special resonance with this project.

I have always carried with me Andalusia's sunny charm and deep connection to light. I rediscover those emotions in this new creation – it becomes my guiding thread throughout the creative process, and this project inspired me from the very beginning.

04

Was there a particular ingredient or accord that you considered essential to express the character of this creation? Why?

Musks have always played an important role in the way I compose. I love their enveloping softness and their ability to bring volume without ever weighing a fragrance down.

In this creation, they accompany the encounter between the luminous freshness of bergamot and the natural elegance of vetiver. They add roundness to the composition, extend the feeling of comfort and contribute to the delicate balance between freshness, sophistication and naturalness that I wanted to express.

“Every fragrance represents a new beginning. After all these years, in every perfume I create I am still searching for that note capable of awakening an immediate emotion.”

It is often said that a perfume has the power to transport us to a specific place or moment. What sensations or memories do you hope to evoke in those who wear it?

I want the perfume I create to evoke a feeling of well-being. For Vetiver & Bergamot, this feeling of well-being comes from a natural freshness that is both discreet and soothing.

As a child, in the patio of our family home in Andalusia, I loved the simple sensation of calm and serenity that has stayed with me throughout my life. Through this fragrance, I wanted to recreate this moment of comfort.

Perfumery is a balance between technique and emotion. In this creation, what role did intuition play alongside expertise?

Intuition always plays an essential role in my work. Every creation begins with a sensation, an image or a word that gives it direction and personality.

Throughout the different projects I have worked on during my career, I've learned to balance technique and emotion. But that’s not all: intuition tells me whether a fragrance conveys a genuine emotion and faithfully expresses the intention that inspired it from the very beginning.

I have never understood perfume as a conceptual object; my language is that of raw materials, sensations and emotions. When a fragrance is right, you recognise it instinctively.

We live in a world driven by rapidly changing trends. What makes a fragrance timeless and allows it to become a true classic?

I believe trends mainly concern the discourse that surrounds fragrances. At its core, our profession remains unchanged: creating emotions, touching people and telling invisible stories through raw materials.

A fragrance becomes timeless when it resonates with people sincerely, when it brings pleasure and finds its natural place in their everyday lives. What allows a perfume to endure is not its connection to a trend, but the intimate bond it creates with the person who wears it.

If you had to describe this fragrance in three words, which would you choose?

Luminous, elegant and natural.

09

How would you like people to feel when they wear this perfume for the first time and, more importantly, after it becomes part of their daily routine?

The first encounter should be an immediate pleasure, something simple and effortless. I love fragrances that touch people naturally, without needing any explanation.

With its luminous freshness and understated elegance, this creation was designed to provide an instant feeling of well-being and comfort. Then, over time, I would like it to become a familiar presence, a reassuring presence that one is happy to rediscover every day.

Like the fragrances I most enjoy creating, it seeks neither excess nor opulence; it rests gently on the skin, like a ray of sunshine that one never tires of finding again.

10

What advice would you give to someone searching for a fragrance that truly reflects their personality?

I would advise them not to over-intellectualize the process. A fragrance is first and foremost a sensory encounter. Take the time to wear it, live with it and listen to what you feel.

I have never seen perfume as a conceptual object; my language is that of raw materials, sensations and emotions. When a fragrance is right, you recognize it instinctively. It finds its natural place on your skin and in your daily life, without needing too many explanations.
