Asunción Bastida is one of the great figures of Spanish fashion and is internationally renowned. She started her activity as a fashion designer working with knitwear. From the beginning and throughout her career, she showed a strong influence of French fashion. In 1926, Asunción Bastida opened her workshop on the first floor of Paseo de Gracia, number 96, and several years later, in 1934, she opened a workshop in Madrid. Asunción Bastida was recognised as one of the so-called Big Five, along with Pedro Rodríguez, Manuel Pertegaz, Santa Eulalia and El Dique Flotante; all of them were creators of the Haute Couture Cooperative, which was responsible for re-expanding the fashion sector, something that was needed during the post-war years.
